Mistakes That Most Undergrads Make
As you go through life in school, you tend to realize that there are certain steps or decisions that you should or shouldn’t have made before and after admission. There are other decisions you might make in future which turned out to become a great mistake which could have been easily avoided if there’d been proper planning and decisive action early enough.
For this reason, this article has been curated to show you common mistakes that students make and what to do to avoid them as well as help you assume some form of responsibility as an adult
NOT MAKING THEIR OWN MONEY
Most students belong to the school of thought that, they are not supposed to go into any gainful venture but face their academics only depending on sponsors for every want and need that may arise.
However, there are a thousand and one legit ways for students to earn money be it online or offline, without affecting their studies from working part-time, vlogging, tutoring, running a small business on the side, blogging, writing, becoming a social media influencer etc. which are all things done using your spare time.
Working or running your own business eliminates debts, keeps you independent and gives you a great deal of experience as well as preparing you for the job market which prefers people with some working experience over those who have never worked or earned a penny in their entire life.
NOT READING ENOUGH
When I say reading, I’m not just referring to regular educational books; I’m also equally talking about books on diverse subject matter especially those on self development. Reading helps to transform your mindset and prepares you mentally for the future making you think and conduct yourself rationally.
Take out time and browse the internet for best reviewed books on self development and business, management, finances, etc. to shape you up mentally alongside your conventional academic material.
FAILING TO LEARN A SKILL
Most students who refuse to think outside the box live in a fairytale of their minds believing that the second they are out of school, they’ll have their dream jobs waiting for them all while depending on their sponsor for all they require.
In school, students who have skills are better off than those who don’t except for a few who are already financially loaded. This set of students do not lack as they get a lot of patronage from those who require their services and expertise daily thanks to the large student community on campus.
Once they’re done with school, students who already have skills hit the ground running by either setting up shop, partnering with others or working freelance while job hunting unlike those without skill who have nothing to fall back to.
GETTING ADDICTED TO GAMBLING
Many students especially the males, find themselves stuck knee-deep in the unwholesome and addictive habit of gambling.
Students sometimes get so attached to gambling that so many cannot go a day without placing a bet with the whim that one day, they’re going to cash out big or somehow get lucky and hit the big piñata to the point that some goes in their favor while others are plunged into huge debts all because of gambling.
Though gambling is legal in many countries of the world, it is both insalubrious and unhealthy for a student to head down this route albeit; colleagues and friends may have made huge gains from gambling but you might not be so fortunate not matter how lucky you feel.
Gambling addiction like any other addiction continues throughout life if not seriously and quickly addressed with necessary measures which are not limited to therapy. Students who have gambled away their school fees sometimes turn to vices so they can make-up for their losses or end up dropping out of school.
Sometimes, some students end up substituting their studies with fun, partying, shopping and a whole lot of trivial stuff thereby skipping classes and other important academic engagements. When academics are neglected for a minute, it reflects in your grades which can get so bad that a student has to retake certain courses and sometimes end up graduating poorly barely making a pass.
What many students do not grasp is that misplaced priorities affects you even more on the long run than it does at present. Graduating with 2 points out of 5 is not at all considered as an achievement in anyway. Once you’re done with school, there’ll be ample opportunity for you to live the good life, have fun and explore the world. Right now, the focus is to bag a good certificate and every other thing about fun comes after.
If you are out to achieve anything important in life, you need to drop any weight that may show you down on this journey called “life”, also, you have to take any engagement you venture into as crucial especially your education which may open many important doors for you in the future.
